Master of the Abstract
January 28 marks the 100th anniversary of Jackson Pollock’s birth. Scroll forward for a brief review of his life and works. . . .
Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyo., in 1912. He grew up in Arizona and California, before eventually moving to New York City to study art.
He married Lee Krasner in 1945, and they moved into a shared studio on Long Island. There he began to perfect his technique with paint.
Pollock’s technique of pouring and dripping paint was coined “action painting.” He moved away from figurative representation and became more abstract.
No. 5, 1948, is a famed example of his technique.
No. 31, 1950 is another.
At the height of his fame in 1950, Pollock abandoned drip painting, and he then moved to an entirely different style.
Pollock finished his last painting, Search, in 1955. He died in a drunk-driving accident in 1956.

Infinity & Beyond
Newt Gingrich is planning to add the moon to America as the 51st state. Here are some other ideas he may have regarding outer space.
He would reuse the Space Lab as an elementary school and hire student space cadets to be custodians.
He would create a government-business partnership to sell planet-naming rights.
He would put massive mirrors in space to illuminate Interstate highways at night. . . . No, wait, that one’s real!
He would create solar-wind farms on Venus.
He would neutralize Iran by building a Death Star whose lowest setting would destroy the entire planet.
He would reconfigure SETI’s radio telescopes to broadcast his lectures to the galaxy.
He would use farm-subsidy money to send unemployed farmers to work in space in orbiting factories. . . . Oh wait, this one’s real too.
